Always summer, never warm.
This is the mantra painted in the Coast Guard's
Polar Sea Icebreaker. While enjoying warm summers up north I've chosen a second chilly summer in McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

costume party

At McMurdo Station, the biggest social activity of the year is likely the Halloween Costume Party. People go all out to come up with some incredible costumes. My costume stayed in Christchurch. It's in a box of belongings I had hoped would make it down here via our GuardMail.

So, my friend Genevieve suggested I go as Laura. The way I figure, 1/3 of people know I have a sister and would put it all together, 1/3 will have no clue, and another 1/3 will actually think Laura was on station and at the party.

The costume party also indicates how well one is doing in the dating scene on station. Rumor is, if you're not with someone by Halloween, it won't happen at all. Last year I made the mark, this year I am more entertained by the effort others are putting forth. I left the festivities early and am now on a mission to find a nice quiet place to remember why I am here.

My favorite costume of the night was Zim. He was the Afghan woman from National Geographic. I was happy to see him win an award for his efforts! Not only was it a fabulous idea, but he executed it perfectly.

These costumes are SO creative and hilarious. I don't think you could have chosen a BETTER costume, A!!!
And your Nat'l Geographic friend is very creative, too. I think he looks JUST as beautiful as that woman.
