McMurdo is an operations center. As such, it's not often that we get out of the way of station enough to escape what I like to call "industrial beauty."
Last night, I wish I had the energy to face the cold and stay up for the darker colors of night. Instead, I snapped a few photos from my dorm lounge window. This morning I was back out on the Ice Runway watching the plane come in (and the Kiwi plane fail to fly due to maintenance issues). On my walk to work I heard the first helicopter of the morning take off for a field camp and I found it more important to check for vehicles on the road. More people on station mean more people driving around our little town.
Our cargo teams are getting bigger and handling more pallets, sleds, and heavy equipment as we continue to pull more flights on station.
I am learning by experience in my job. We have had plenty of people changing flights, planes down for maintenance, medevacs to add to our northbound manifests, and South Pole folks' redeployment housing and travel info (including my sister's) to send up to Christchurch.
There's never a dull moment!
